Electricity
Market Design

Energy storage deployment in Europe is still hindered by obstacles, such as lack of long-term market signals and long-term contracts, barriers to permitting and accessing support measures, and discriminatory grid fees and double taxation.

This makes energy storage projects not yet as attractive to investors as needed to keep up with the pace of renewable energy deployment.

The Electricity Market Design has the potential to address many of these barriers.

To increase energy storage deployment, the new Electricity Market Design should ensure:

  • Correct market signals which would allow clean energy storage solutions to compete against incumbent fossil fuel assets.
  • A forward-looking, iterative and transparent systems planning for the targeted deployment of more renewables in combination with energy storage in the grid.
  • The implementation of European legislation targeting the barriers to deployment of both renewables and energy storage.
